Sam Layton Greening, 79, of Ashland, died peacefully at home after an extended illness on Tuesday morning, May 21, 2013.
Sam was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Catlettsburg, a son of the late Horace Layton and Mary Wilma White Greening. He served his country honorably during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of South Ashland United Methodist Church and maintained a tax preparation business after his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ann Greening and Sue Tutwiler.
He is survived by his wife, Dody Greening; a daughter, Denise Greening of Ashland; a son, Sam Greening Jr. of La Jolla, Calif.; two grandsons, Nick and Andy Wheeler of Ashland; a brother, Horace (Deborah) Greening Jr. of Marietta, Ga.; and three sisters, Doris (Gordon) Moore, Helen (Ron) Dixon and Angela (Jeff) Slone, all of Ashland.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Lance Campbell. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum in Ashland.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
