CARTER - Roy Purnell, 91, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Carter County, died Monday, July 8, 2013, at the Tidewell Hospice House in Venice.
He was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Carter County to the late Leslie and Georgia Kitchen Purnell.
He was employed at the National Cash Register Co. in Dayton with 32 years of service, having retired in 1978.
Roy served his country proudly during World War II in the Signal Corps.
Upon his wife's retirement in 1986, they moved to Venice, Fla.
Roy was preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Vella Sparks Purnell; a son, Larry Purnell of Maryland; two daughters, Leoma McKee of Springfield, Ohio, and Deborah Purnell of California; a sister-in-law, Jessie Purnell of Londonary, Ohio; a granddaughter; several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends, neighbors, Tom and Christina LaSalle and Charles Alexander of Venice.
Roy was a member of the Gregoryville Christian Church, having been saved and baptized at 86 years of age.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, July 13, 2013, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the funeral home by Donald Damron and Keith Pennington, ministers. Entombment will follow at the Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
