Richmond Blanton (1923-2008)
Richmond Blanton, 84, of Ashland, departed this life on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at Boyd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.
He was born April 5, 1923, in Magoffin County, the son of the late Gardner and Patty Borders Blanton.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Trixie Howard Blanton; five brothers, Stewart Blanton, Raymond Blanton, Roland Blanton, Russell Blanton and Jimmie Blanton; and two sisters, Gladys Hampton-Collins and Edith Mullins.
He is survived by a daughter, Connie Honaker and her husband, Jim, of Ashland; a grandson, James Richmond "JR" Honaker, also of Ashland; a sister, Joyce Patrick of Cincinnati; a brother, Wayne Blanton of Lexington; a special friend, Yneth Broughton of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews.
Richmond was a retired salesman throughout eastern Kentucky, an avid hunter and enjoyed traveling. He was in the military service during World War II. He was in the 66th Black Panther Infantry Division and was in battles in France, Belgium and Germany. Richmond received the Bronze Star Medal, European African Campaign Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He also received an Honorable Service Lapel Button and was a World War II marksman with the M1 Garand, BAR, 1911 45 Pistol, M1 Carbine and Mortar. Richmond received a special diploma for his contribution in the fight to liberate France from the Axis in WWII. He received a Certificate of Appreciation from three governors of Kentucky in recognition as a Distinguished Kentucky World War II Veteran. Richmond was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled Veterans and was a Kentucky Colonel. Richmond was a member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at noon Friday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Wayne Hensley, Don Hampton and Russell Griffith.
Burial will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park. Military graveside services will be provided by Ironton VFW Post 8850.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
