ASHLAND - Paul G. Hughes, 75, of Ashland, died Tuesday evening, April 12, 2011, in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center.
He was born Sept. 23, 1935, in Clintwood, Va., a son of the late Colley and Blanche Elam Hughes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carolyn Donta Hughes, in 2001 and a brother, Charles Ray Hughes.
He was owner of Hughes 29th Street BP Station. He was a United States Navy veteran and a member of Pollard Baptist Church, the Greenbo Bass Club and Triangle Fishing Lodge. He loved to fish with his friends.
Surviving are his sons, Jack D. Dempsey and wife Diana of Johnson City, Tenn., Mark E. Dempsey and wife Paula of Charleston, W.Va., and Paul Richard "Rick" Hughes of Ashland; a daughter, Teresa Carolyn Dempsey of Ashland; a brother, Kelly Hughes and wife Linda of Ashland; sisters Betty Jo Porter of Ashland and Martha Jane Wheeler of Rush; six grandchildren, Tyler Dempsey, Clay Dempsey, Clarke Dempsey, Wesley Hughes, Pike Dempsey and Andrew Hughes; and three great-grandchildren, Bryden Hughes, Trevor Dempsey and Cooper Dempsey.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Wesley K. Smith. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland. A military service will be by American Legion Post 93 of Kenova.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2011, at the funeral home.
