ASHLAND - Opal South Mayo, 90, of Ashland, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, in Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
She was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Bulan, Perry County, a daughter of the late Polk and Elvira South, a coal miner and housewife. She was a graduate of Morehead State and taught school for more than 40 years, with the last years at Poage Elementary in Ashland.
She was a member of South Ashland United Methodist Church, a volunteer at King's Daughters Medical Center, the American Heart Association and various other causes. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling extensively all over the world, playing bridge, walking at the mall and telling a good joke. She was a serious clothing shopper.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Hampton Mayo Jr., whom she married in September 1941 and who worked at C&O Railroad until his death in 1978.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald David Mayo of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, who died in 2000, and a sister, Geraldine Sturdivant of Elizabethtown.
Survivors include a son, Harry Randall Mayo of Atlanta and a brother, Estill Ray South of Irvine.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2011, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Private entombment will be in Rose Hill Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association, 1544 Winchester Ave., Suite 805, Ashland, KYa��41101.
