Josie “Myrtle” Hayes, 99, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019 in Lexington, Kentucky. She was surrounded by family and died peacefully.
Mrs. Hayes was born June 3, 1919 in Ashland, one of six children born to the late Henry Amos and Alpha Rosa Porter Salyers. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Clyde W. Hayes, brothers Ford, Marvin, Wayne and John Salyers and her sister Nola Highley.
Myrtle’s parents died prematurely and she was raised by Belden and Nan Green in Elliott County. There, she married Clyde Hayes and lived on the family farm until 1965.
She was a loving homemaker to her family and a faithful member of Unity Baptist Church in Ashland, KY.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children Patricia (Pat) Randolph of Louisville, KY, Joyce Carol Wood of Louisville, KY, Alice May and husband Bill of Hattiesburg, MS, Billie Jean Byer of Lexington, Clyde Hayes, Jr., and wife Helen of Georgetown, KY, James Hayes and wife Teri of Flatwoods, KY, and Sheila Simpson and husband Jim of Lexington, KY, 23 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2019 at the Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel by Mark Maynard. Entombment will follow in the Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday evening, May 16, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and from 12:00 Noon until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
