Mary Jane Smith, 88, of Raceland, passed away Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, in South Shore Nursing and Rehab Center. Mary Jane was born Aug. 25, 1928, to the late Omer and Fannie May Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Curtis Smith, Onis Smith and Homer "Junior" Smith; and two sisters, Dorothy Googlechuck and Joyce Marie "Dixie" Murphy. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Raceland, where she attended the Mary and Martha Sunday School Class. She worked at Ashland Oil and retired as a Lab Technician after 30 years of faithful service. After retirement, she became a member of Ashland Oil Retirees Breakfast Club. Mary Jane was and avid gardner and loved to can her harvest, especially pickles and beets. Mary Jane leaves behind one brother, Herbert Smith of Ypsilanti, Mich.; one sister, Fonnie Kincaid of Raceland; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; and a host of extended family and friends. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood with Brother Tom Stephens officiating. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
