Marguerite Ellen Del Vecchio, 96, of Arcadian Cove, Richmond, formerly of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012.
She was born Nov. 18, 1915, in Russell, a daughter of the late Charles Burdette and Lake Rowe Henzman. She was the widow of Andrew Del Vecchio.
She received her B.S. degree from Northwestern University, with additional courses from Virginia Intermont College, Marshall College and the University of Kentucky. Mrs. Del Vecchio was an educator, having taught for 30 years in various public schools including Benton, Tenn., and Tennessee Wesleyan College. She retired from Ashland Public Schools, having taught English for 23 years at Paul G. Blazer High School. In her retirement, she was active in various retired teacher organizations and served as president of the Boyd County Retired Teachers and Eastern Kentucky Retired Teachers associations. Mrs. Del Vecchio was honored for her valuable contribution to the education of the citizens of Ashland by receiving a key to the City of Ashland.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ashland and the United Methodist Women. She was an expert quilter and served as curator of quilts for the Kentucky Highlands Museum. She was a volunteer at King's Daughters Health Center and was president of Circle No. 2 at the King's Daughters Home. She enjoyed knitting, cooking, gardening and calligraphy and was a short story author, poet and painter.
She was a loving and supportive mother to her children, who survive her - a son, Donald S. Del Vecchio (Inger) of Miami, Fla.; her daughter, Victoria "Vicki" Irwin (Harry) of Richmond; three grandchildren, Jason Irwin, Christina Del Vecchio and Laura Del Vecchio; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew Irwin, Lea Learch and Caroline Irwin.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Lazear Funeral Home by the Rev. Jacob Lee. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
