Lonnie William Evans Sr. (1925-2008)
Lonnie William Evans Sr., 82, of Westwood, Ky., husband of Garnett Maynard Evans, died Wednesday afternoon in Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.
Bill was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Tom and Lillie Jackson Evans. He was a retired labor foreman with North American Refractories and Allied Chemical and a U.S. Navy veteran. Bill was a member of Rockdale Freewill Baptist Church, where he was active in the Men's Bible Study Class, and was a former coach in the Westwood Little League Baseball program.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Tommy Joe Evans and wife Marcella of Ashland, Ky., Lonnie William Evans Jr. and wife Shirley of Sunbury, Ohio, and Ricky Evans of Ashland; two daughters, Barbara Dale Ronk and husband William of Johnstown, Ohio, and Kathy Collins and husband Ron of Pelham, Ala.; a sister, Alice McKnight of Ashland; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Rockdale Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church by the Rev. Joe Hutchinson and the Rev. Frank Carl. Military honors will be by Ironton VFW Post 8850. A private memorial committal will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
Arrangements are under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland.
