Juanita Osborne (1920-2009)
Juanita Smallwood Osborne, 88, of Ashland, widow of Oliver Osborne, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, in KDMC following a brief illness.
Juanita was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Danville, Ky., a daughter of the late Joe and Mary Smallwood. She was the retired owner of a local fabric shop and attended First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Juanita loved to travel, participated in the MAC Travel club and took a dozen cruises to places including China, South America, the Amazon, Europe and Alaska.
She was an avid reader, an extremely competitive and skilled Scrabble player and loved playing cards with her card buddies. She became a medical pioneer in 1966 when she was among the earliest living organ donors, giving one of her kidneys to her oldest son, Burl. Her remaining kidney functioned successfully until her death, and her son is among her survivors.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Oliver Osborne, and a brother, Harry Smallwood.
Survivors include three sons, Burl (and wife Betty) Osborne of Dallas, Texas, David Osborne of Ashland and Richard (and wife Joyce) Osborne of Ashland; a half brother, Mike Smallwood of Dorton, Ky.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 at Caniff Funeral Home at 528 Wheatley Road in Westwood.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Interment at a private family service will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
