J.R. "Ron" Dixon - 1938-2008
J.R. "Ron" Dixon, 70, of Ashland, died Friday at his residence.
He was born June 6, 1938, in Boyd County, son of the late William T. "Tommy" and Thelma Brown Dixon. He was the husband of Josephine "Jo" Lowe Dixon, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Navy, where he served during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He was retired as a welder and carpenter for National Mine Service Co. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church for 61 years; American Legion Clarence Fields Post 76; the Fraternal Order of Eagles; VFW Post 1168 and Rush Masonic Lodge 715, F&AM, where he was a 33rd-degree Mason and HT.
He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Jason "Skittles" Cordle.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Chuck Cordle and Keith Cordle, both of Ashland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Steve Chatterton of Huntington and Connie and Rob Malatek of North Pole, Alaska; six grandchildren, Ann (Chris) Lyons; James (Evie) Webb; Blake and Derek Cordle; and Cecil (Keri) and Joseph (Monica) Webb, who are both serving in Iraq; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Billy Gene and Ruth Dixon of Ashland.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Michael Rice and Dr. Floyd Paris. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park, with military graveside rites by Ceredo-Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Veterans Auxiliary, 1540 Spring Valley Drive, Huntington, W.Va., or Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
His fellow members of the Masonic lodge will act as pallbearers.
