John Paul Vincent (1920-2008)
John Paul Vincent, 87, of Lexington, Ohio, died May 26, 2008, in Lexington Court Care Center. He was known by many and loved by all who had the pleasure to know him in both Ohio and Kentucky.
He was born June 8, 1920, in Hitchins, Ky., a very small town near Ashland. After graduating from Hitchins High School in 1938, he attended Morehead State University for two years and then enlisted in the Army because of World War II. He was assigned duty in the Pacific arena from 1940 to 1945, spending his years each at Okinawa, Guadalcanal and Biak, with short duties at New Caledonia.
Upon his return home from the war, John continued earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Dayton and his master's degree from George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. He dedicated his life and career to public education. He was a vocational teacher of typing, recordkeeping, shorthand and business procedures at Norwood High School near Cincinnati for more than 30 years.
He married his beloved wife of 53 years, Adele Glass Vincent, in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his oldest son, John Paul Vincent Jr., in 1994.
He is survived by his youngest son, Dan Vincent, also of Lexington, along with his daughter-in-law, Vicki Vincent, and his three grandchildren, Hannah, age 10, Abby, age 8 and Michael, age 5, whom he adored. He was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church of the Cross.
John and Adele were married in February 1946 at her parent's farmhouse in Grayson, Ky. They spent wonderful, happy years raising their two sons in Norwood, Ohio, where both were involved in school work. John was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. He had resided with his son in Lexington since his wife passed away in 1999.
Visitation for John Vincent will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30 at Caniff Funeral Home, 528 Wheatley Road, Westwood, Ashland, KY 41101 at 11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
