James Roger Gumbert, 77, of Winchester, Kentucky, formerly of Ashland, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington.
Jim was born February 15, 1942, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late Walter and Maude Archie Gumbert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, Hope Mullins whom he loved dearly and considered to be a second mother.
Jim was a 1960 graduate of Wurtland High School where he was an outstanding athlete and member of the football team, basketball team, and track team. Following high school he served honorably for seven years in the U. S. Navy Reserves and served active duty aboard the USS Newport News during the Cuban Crisis. He retired following a 30 year career with Allied Chemical and Armco Steel. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Russell. Jim was a devoted family man. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his beloved wife, family and spending time with his grandchildren and with a fishing pole in his hand.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Deborah Moore Gumbert of Winchester; daughter, Robin Helton of Nicholasville; son, Ryan (Jessica) Gumbert of Lexington; brother, Don (Pat) Gumbert of Raceland; grandchildren, Blake Helton, Gage Helton, Tate Helton and Josie Gumbert; uncle, Joe Gumbert; and special friends, George Clark, Bob (Nanci) Dower, and David (Linda) Burchett.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2019, at Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel with Pastor Ken Gowin and Pastor Acy Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park where military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy and American Legion Kenova Post 93.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
