James Eagan

January 20, 1925 — February 1, 2013

James E. Eagan, 88, of Flatwoods, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Eagan was born Jan. 8, 1925, in Peabody, Mass., a son of the late James L. and Anna M. Dullea Eagan.

James was a C-Scout in his youth and a member of BPO Elks Lodge 350, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 0931, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and Moore Street Tabernacle in Ashland. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II and was assigned to the USS Boise, which earned 11 Battle Stars. After the war, he was assigned to the USS New, after which he was brought into the Huntington, W.Va., recruiting office.

He was married to the late Velva Shannon Eagan. He later retired with 31 years of service as a purchasing agent with the former Allied Signal Co. in Ashland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Hanna Eagan.

He is survived by two sons, Brian E. and Teresa Diane Eagan of Ashland and Richard D. and Sandra Eagan of Huntington; five grandsons, Michael Eagan of Virginia, Jonathan Eagan of Ohio, Phillip Eagan of Virginia, Sean Eagan of Florida and Christopher Eagan of Alaska; six great-grandchildren, which includes a special great-granddaughter, Madison Thompson of Kentucky, Kayla, Mackenna and Cody of Alaska, and Sophie and Jocelyn Eagan of Florida; five stepgrandchildren, Selena VanHoose of West Virginia, Sonja Thompson of Kentucky, David Fiffe of West Virginia, Dr. Ricky Cremeans Jr. of South Carolina and Jessica Stapleton of Nebraska; a cousin, Charles Lawrence of Massachusetts; a niece, Vicki and Dennis Petershon of Colorado; and a nephew, David and Cookie Ferrell of West Virginia.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Scott Byard. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, where he will be honored with military graveside rites by Ceredo-Kenova American Legion Post 93.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 7, 2013, at the funeral home.
