Donald Disney

October 17, 1954 — July 24, 2012

Donald Paul Disney, 59, of Russell, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2012.

He was born Nov. 17, 1952, to the late Paul V. and Betty R. Disney. He was also preceded in death by a beloved uncle, Walter Disney.

He joined the U.S. Navy in his 20s, moved to California for a few years and Michigan for a bit, before settling back in Russell with his family. He was a painter with several local unions across the United States and also spent time as a lineman climbing mountains installing towers. He was currently working at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., where he was able to interact and joke with lots of people daily. He spoke often of how much he enjoyed his job.

When he wasn't working, he spent time at his favorite fishing spot, the North Fork of Triplett Creek, but his main love in life was University of Kentucky athletics. He would argue he was the No. 1 UK fan. Don was a member of American Legion Post 76. He enjoyed visiting there often and always had stories and jokes to tell from his visits.

He is survived by a son, Christopher Disney (Stacy) of Richmond; grandchildren Paul, Kaylee, Gemma and Corina; a sister, Kathy Layman (Gary); a niece, Ashley Layman-Bohanon (Richard), and their children, Rilee and Marlowe; an uncle, Donald B. Disney (Carolyn), their daughter, Stephanie Sewell (Wick), and their children; an aunt, Kathy Disney and children Heather Chong (Fernando) and George Disney (Julie) and their children; and a special cousin, Wes Disney (Susan), and their children.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Ike Nicholson. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum in Ashland, with military rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93.

Visitation will be after noon Saturday at the funeral home.

Don would want to be remembered as the consummate jokester. He was never short a one-liner or a light- hearted prank. Don was a free spirit and lived his life on his terms.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to the Putnam Stadium Restoration Fund, c/o Donna Suttle, 1520 Lexington Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Condolences may be sent to steenfuneralhome.com.
