ASHLAND - Charles L. Simmons, 84, of Ashland, passed away Sept. 22, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 16, 1928, in Huntington, W.Va., to the late Arthur Frank and Ethel Shepherd Simmons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Ruth Carolyn Rupert Simmons; a sister, Betty Sentenney; and a brother, John Franklin Simmons.

He went to work for Ashland Oil & Refining Co. in August of 1948 and retired in January 1993, with 45 years of service in the marine department. He spent the first 10 years at the River Terminal in Kenova, W.Va., and the remaining 35 years as traffic manager for the Inland Waterway Division.

He was a member and deacon of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ashland. He loved to sing and was a choir member for many years.

He was a 30-year member and past president of the Ashland Salvation Army Advisory Board, a member and past president of the Ashland Lions Club and a 23-year member of the Ashland Elks BPOE 350. He was named a Kentucky colonel in 1984 by then Governor Martha Layne Collins.

Charles is survived by two sons, Michael Lee Simmons (Teddy Jobe) and Charles Patrick (Patti) Simmons, both of Ashland; and daughter, Elizabeth Anne (Richard) Willis of Ledbetter; seven grandchildren, Scott (Heather) Simmons, Dustin Simmons, Rebecca (Joe) Gilbert, Brian Willis, Laura (Grant) Shelby, Lacy Simmons and Cory Simmons; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ashland, with the Rev. Ike Nicholson officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 1930 Winchester Ave., Ashland, KY 41101 or to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
