ASHLAND - Charles William King Sr., 95, formerly of Ashland, passed away Jan. 5, 2012, following an extended illness.
Charles was born Feb. 5, 1916, in Huntington, W.Va. He retired from Armco and previously worked at the Navy Yard in Norfolk, Va., where he helped build and attended the christening of one of the first aircraft carriers, The Shangri-La, which was named by President Roosevelt. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, a Mason, a Kentucky colonel and previously served as a board member for Fairview schools.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Stella King, and his wife, Anita Renfroe King.
He is survived by his brother, Ernest King; a sister-in-law, Betty Hall; his daughter, Patty King Neal (Gordon); his son, Charlie William King Jr. (Rhonda); four grandchildren, Michael Neal (Leann), Sandy Hollon (Mark), Christina Zande (Drew) and Charles William King III (Briney); eight great-grandchildren, Sgt. Jesse Neal (Alexis), Star Neal, Sierra Neal, Alexandra Hollon, Mason Zande, Bella Zande, Charles William King IV and Jack Zande; and a great-great-grandson, Jaxon Neal.
He was a remarkable man who was and is loved very much by his family.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 10, 2012, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
