CARL GIBBS

October 12, 1940 — February 6, 2017

Carl C. Gibbs Sr., 76, of Ashland, passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born Oct. 12, 1940, in Ashland, a son of the late B.E. and Nannie Cantrell Gibbs. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Elwood and Jim Gibbs; and sisters, Dorla Gambill, Lou Adkins and Wanda Dickens.
Carl worked as a general contractor and was owner and operator of Gibco Homebuilders. He served honorably in the Army National Guard and was a member of American Legion Post 379 in Bedford, Texas and Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. 313 in Huntington, W.Va. He was an avid bowler and Cincinnati Reds fan. He was nicknamed the "Godfather of Bluegrass" but most enjoyed being "Poppy" to his beloved grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, C.C. and Julie Gibbs of Ashland; daughters Debbie and Randy Adams of Ashland, Carla Nichols and Dan Peters of Arlington, Texas, Tina and Bob Roberts of Haslet, Texas, and Amber and Chip Kelley of Ashland; brother, Tony Gibbs of Ashland; sisters, Gloria Wenning and Janet Marsh of Ashland; grandchildren Kyler Nichols, Keaton Nichols, Evan Pittman, Justin Pittman, Tanner Pittman, Wesley Gibbs, Maya Gibbs, Tre Kelley, Joe Kelley, Drew Kelley, Melanie Kelley, Shanna Copeland, Amber Roberts and Megan Blankenship; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Sherif, Kaleb Copeland, Kyliegh Copeland and Jamie Copeland; and his special buddy, Paxton.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland with Chaplain Jimm Smedley officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
