Steele Jr. - 1926-2008
Byron Steele Jr., 82, of Ashland, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center.
Byron was born July 27, 1926, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Byron Steele Sr. and Bessie Hutchinson Steele.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired locomotive operator with AK Steel and member of East Fork United Baptist Church. He was a member of Fred M. Gross Lodge 953, F&AM, and the Swinging Senior Tuesday Bowling League.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Irene Qualls Steele; four brothers John, Bill, George and Pat Steele; and a grandson, Blake Steele.
Survivors include two sons, James "Jim" (Debbie Lewis) Steele of Rock Hill, S.C., and Byron Gary (Sherry) Steele of Jupiter, Fla; five daughters, Regina (Fred) Redman of Ashland, Ky., Deborah Haines of Homewood, Ala., Janet (Bobby Jack) Faulkner of Ashland, Kathy (Ray) Kleykamp of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Kim (Darren) Viola of Gonzales, La.; a brother, Robert Steele of Ashland; two sisters, Sue (Don) Hartman and Mary Lyons, all of Ashland; 18 grandchildren, Heather (Matt) Spillman, Misty (Warren) Michael, Reece Steele, David (Susan) Redman, Daniel (Braiza) Redman, Meredith Haines, Aaron and Chase Adkins, Adam (Kelly) Slone, Brandon Slone, Ray Kleykamp Jr., Beth (Drew) Mutch, Annie Kleykamp, Julie Frazier, Ashton and Dylan Viola, Kaelyn and Kasey Steele and Rose-Linda (Justin) Stafford; 10 great-grandchildren, Jacob Steele, Mason Spillman, Bryce Steele, Rachel, Megan, Isaac and Alexis Redman, Weldon Frazier and Ada and Andrew Mutch; a beloved cat, Joey; and special family friends Sue and Carl Rakes.
Byron was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be conducted by Brother David Trimble at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum. Military services will be by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 7, 2008. Masonic services will be at 6 p.m. today by officers and members of Fred M. Gross Lodge 953, F&AM.
